Wife and I have an anniversary coming up. She decided she wants to go see some Europe. We will be going through Austria, Slovakia and Czech republic. Best I can remember from Hostel is that I will need a lot of bubble gum and/or cigarettes to pay off kids and save our lives.

If I were to rent a Lada of some sort (POS so kids don’t steal the hub caps) can I rent it from one country and leave it in another? I.E. Pick up the rental in Austria and leave it with Czechs?

Do I need an international driver permit?

Wish me luck.

No Lada that I am aware of in a mainstream European fleet. There are plenty of cheapo cars, but nothing Russian.

One way rentals should be possible, but there are sometimes onerous surcharges for the convenience. Very easy train travel between Prague, Vienna, Bratislava, and all major cities in the region - if you aren’t going into the sticks, you might not need a car. In Vienna or Prague, a car is a hassle. I don’t think an International permit is mandatory, but it might not hurt.

I was trying to visit some cities/towns off the beaten path. Some places look pretty cool. Other than parking, what’s the problem with car?

Europe is where people hand you their babies as you exit the train station.

Iraq is where kids accept cigarettes as payment and Mexico is where kids ask for gum.

I’ve never seen hostel.

Parking is a challenge in much of Prague and Vienna - you’ll pay North American major city rates for an overnight spot. Traffic can be very congested, too - I suspect transit is often faster, in the city anyway.

Small towns can be time consuming trips with transfers, and a car might be useful for those. A lot of it might depend on how long you want to visit the outlying places, and comparing train schedules vs drive times.

Yeah. It makes sense. No need for a car in a town like Vienna or Prague. I don’t think I need a car for that long. Just the travel from Vienna to Prague and since there are cool places in between, we might pop into those for a little bit, but not for too long. I mean the whole trip from A to B without stops is a little over 3 hours. One day should be enough

When I traveled through Germany and France, I had a car. It was a one way rental from Munich to Paris, that basically doubled the cost. It was a pain in the ass to park in Paris, and expensive, but it allowed us to do the trip we wanted to so it was well worth it. Slept in it at Le Mans and took it to the ring where we rented another car to drive around the ring.

nice. Yeah. I am not planning on running it through the ring or anything. Just wanted to use it to go to random places on the way from Vienna to Prague. There are some really cool places... and some bubble gum towns.

I took a train from Prague to Vienna in November. It stops in Brno, but I don’t recall any other significant stops. A business class (the highest class) seat was only like $60 USD, which seemed like a fine rate for a scenic ride, and you also get a drink and a small food voucher. However, a one way car rental like that, returning the car upon entering the city, wouldn’t be a problem. Short term one way rentals do have high rates though.

Vienna to Bratislava is also an easy route on the train.

Good to know. Thanks. I may still go the train route.. I just wanted to know if I can rent from one country and leave it in the other. I also contemplated getting an international driver permit but some suggest it’s not necessary.

One way cross-border rentals shouldn’t be a problem from any mainstream carrier. The only issue will be cost, and possibly restrictions on vehicle class - the highest cars are probably not eligible.

Yeah, for the permit, probably not worth the cost. I think I got one for my first driving trip in Europe, was never asked for it.
